On our winter farm in Florida, we grow a substantial amount of watermelon radishes and bunched specialty baby radishes such as Breakfast and Easter Egg. We don’t grow them in summer on Long Island because a nematode that’s endemic to the soils here would require a chemical spray that we choose not to use, as it is believed to be too hazardous to both field workers and the environment. But we get to enjoy our Florida winter harvest into the spring, because nothing compares to a crunchy radish eaten with a great bread slathered with an even greater butter.
